Ice Clouds and Under the Glacier are part of a body of work celebrating the dramatic yet fragile Icelandic
landscape, experienced as part of an arts residency in the remote Wesfjords of Iceland.
Ruth McDermott was particularly inspired by the Mýrdalsjökull glacier – an ice cap which sits on the Katla
volcano in southern Iceland, creating an environment of contrasts between pure white ice and black volcano dust. However, like all glaciers the world over, Mýrdalsjökull is in retreat and soon will exist in memory only.
